Ludhiana, September 01 Catch them young seems to be the new mantra for the Ludhiana police who want to infuse awareness regarding traffic awareness amongst citys impressionable minds. As a first step in this regard, the Ludhiana range police have planned to organise a poster-making competition for schoolchildren on September 8.
Ludhiana Range Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Police Ishwar Singh said the competition will help create awareness among students about the dangers of rash driving.
The DIG said the competition will be organised at the Sacred Heart Convent School, Sarabha Nagar, on September 8.
Students will be required to enlist a creative slogan on road safety and two students each from Class VIII to Class XI from any school of the city can participate in the competition, he said. He added that students interested in participating in the competition are required to bring full drawing sheets, drawing board, pins and colour boxes
Commissioner Darwin Dottin told the DAILY NATION yesterday that the force would be carefully perusing criminal legislation to see whether or not these dub posters violated the law.
Noting that police forces worldwide were fighting against a developing gun culture, the police chief said: 'It's an issue that we are all trying to arrest.'
The offending 'dub stickers', which have been posted on walls and utility poles around the bus terminals and even in the Swan Street shopping centre, promote a fete scheduled for Friday night at the popular dub house Lava Ground in The City.
'We would have to determine if it [poster] is encouragement for persons to use firearms. Maybe there's a remedy under common law under inciting persons to commit a criminal act,' he said, while noting that research in this direction would begin immediately.
Dottin said the surging gun culture, particularly involving young males, was a serious headache for not only regional police forces but also those in developed countries like Britain.
The top cop also pointed out that the force was paying close attention to 'flyers promoting women in a lewd manner,' after several complaints from members of the public.
'There has to be some leeway for adult entertainment but we have to watch carefully it doesn't cross the boundaries,' he added
