PAWS stands for 'Peers Are Wonderful Support'. The student grassroots community effort is a campaign run by the town's Youth Services Department which has been sending the message to East Hartford youth for years now that drugs and alcohol are not cool, and even if someone out there tries to tempt you to abuse them, there are many ways to resist.
The group calls on students - called 'peer leaders'- to organize and lead activities aimed towards anti-drug awareness, something that differentiates it from other programs says Linda Chamberlain, East Hartford Youth Services Program Coordinator who is often based at Sunset Ridge School.
'That's important, because these young people are their community's representatives, and their purpose is to ensure the safety of their friends, and be the voice for prevention around substance abuse,' she says
